Companion is an early-stage start-up aiming to transform how pet owners communicate with their dogs. Their founding team of animal behavioral and computer vision experts created an automated, at-home behavioral training platform that combines machine learning, robotics, and advanced computer vision.

15 weeks — Brand Identity, App Design
frog Design, 2021
Today, dog training is expensive, cumbersome, and often has a low success rate. The frog team collaborated with Companion to help optimize the industrial design of their product, refresh their brand, and craft a user experience that more fully realizes their vision of fostering deeper relationships and understanding between pets and humans.
My role was twofold: redefine the brand identity. Next, build a design language system and app-MVP prototype using the new brand.
Following in-depth workshops and stakeholder interviews, our team gained a comprehensive understanding of Companion's needs and aspirations. We subsequently developed three possible strategic directions to guide our work across the Industrial Design, Brand, and Experience tracks. After additional quantitative research, we honed in on the direction focused on the intimate bond between you and your dog.
As we developed the brand language, we narrowed in on iterations that explore graphic elements that could reference the hardware and software in an approachable way. I designed a new logomark that succinctly portrays the device's function while also feeling forward-facing and futuristic.
The client loved the logomark and graphic elements I introduced. I then collaborated with an interaction designer to produce an experience prototype and deliver a foundational design system for the app-MVP. We completed 2 sprints, thoroughly documenting each step for development purposes. Working closely with the Companion team, we prioritized the most important features for the app, while also earmarking certain features for implementation in Phase II.
During the app development phase, I had the opportunity to extend the brand identity by defining an illustration style and exploring different ways in which the graphic elements and patterns could be incorporated.
